Who we are
Supertram (South Yorkshire Future Trams Limited) operates the tram network in South Yorkshire.
We act as the data controller for any personal data captured through these systems.
Our CCTV systems operate across the Supertram Network, including:
- Onboard trams
- Magna tram train station
- Body worn cameras used by authorised staff
Use of CCTV at Tram Stops
CCTV is used to help us:
- Help keep passengers and staff safe
- Prevent and detect crime, anti-social behaviour and safety incidents
- Support investigations incidents, complaints or legal claims
Cameras are positioned and operated in a way that is necessary, proportionate and respectful of privacy, and their use is reviewed regularly.
What information may be collected
Through CCTV systems, we may capture:
- Video images of individuals
- Time, date and location of recordings
Audio is only captured where clearly indicated (for example, on specific body worn cameras).
Lawful basis for processing
We process CCTV footage under:
- Legal obligation
- Public task
We process CCTV footage under Article 6(1)(e) UK GDPR – Public Task. This means processing is necessary for us to carry out our public function of operating a safe and secure public transport system in the public interest.
How your data is protected
We take appropriate steps to keep CCTV data secure, including:
- Restricted access to authorised personnel only
- Secure storage systems
- Audit logs and regular access reviews
- Training for staff who handle CCTV data
Who CCTV data may be shared with
Where lawful and necessary, CCTV footage may be shared with:
- Police and other law enforcement agencies
- Relevant authorities
- Approved partners involved in incident investigation or legal proceedings.
Information is only shared on a need-to-know basis and in accordance with data protection law.
How long footage is kept
We will only retain your data for as long as necessary, in line with our Data Retention Policy.
CCTV footage is normally retained for up to 28 days.
Footage may be kept for longer where:
- It is required for an active investigation
- It relates to an incident, complaint or legal claim
Once no longer needed, footage is securely deleted.
Your rights
Under data protection law, you have the right to:
- Request access to your personal data (including CCTV footage)
- Request correction of inaccurate personal data
- Request deletion of your data (where applicable)
- Request restriction of processing
- Object to processing in certain circumstances
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
Please note that some rights are not absolute and may be limited where CCTV footage is required for public safety, crime prevention or legal reasons.
