Essential works to improve your Supertram network will take place from Monday 27 July to Friday 7 August inclusive (12 days). These works will not affect services for Tramlines Festival. View more information about Tramlines travel advice and changes to tram services.

We'll complete track renewal works on Norton Avenue, helping to enhance your journey and ensure continued reliability of our services.

There will be further changes to Purple route services from Saturday 8 August due to major renewal works taking place near Fitzalan Square. View more information about these works and plan ahead.

Purple route

Purple route tram services will run a reduced service between Cathedral and Gleadless Townend. Services will not be able to operate between Gleadless Townend and Herdings Park.

  • Customers can continue their journey from Gleadless Townend to Herdings, Leighton Road, and Herdings Park using Local bus services

For journeys between the City Centre and Gleadless Townend, customers can use Blue route tram services to complete their journey. Local bus services are available beyond Gleadless Townend, with further details provided in the Local Bus Services section below.

Supertram tickets will be valid on local buses towards Herdings/Leighton Road and Herdings Park.

Local bus services


Local bus services 18/18a and 47/48 will continue to serve Herdings Park during the works.

  • For journeys between Herdings Park and the City Centre: Use local bus services 47/48, which provide a direct connection and operate more frequently than changing between bus and tram.
  • For journeys between Gleadless Townend and Herdings Park: Use local bus services 18/18a to connect with tram services.
  • Track your bus: Use TSY Live Departures to see the location of your next bus on a real-time map.
  • Travel with your tram ticket: Show any valid tram ticket purchased in advance using the TSY Mobile App or from a tram conductor. Tickets can also be purchased from the bus driver.

Speed up your journey by having your ticket ready to show the driver. You can also purchase a ticket using contactless card or cash when you board, just ask for a ticket like you would do from a tram conductor.

From Saturday 8 August there will be disruptions along all tram routes due to major renewal works taking place near Fitzalan Square. View more information about these works by visiting the Supertram Network Improvements page.

Tram Stop iconLocal bus stop locations

The renewal works taking place on Norton Avenue (between Gleadless Townend and Herdings/Leighton Road tram stop) will prevent trams from being able to serve Herdings/Leighton Road and Herdings Park. The vast majority of the Supertram network will operate as normal.

For travel beyond Gleadless Townend towards Herdings/Leighton Road and Herdings Park, change between tram and bus services at Gleadless Townend.

Changes to local transport

These renewal works will affect some roads and footpaths, but disruption is expected to be minimal for most people.

Our works are not expected to affect pedestrians. All footpaths and crossings around the worksite at Herdings will be open as normal.

Local buses

No local bus services are expected be affected by these works.

Car icon

Roads

Traffic management will be in place throughout the works, with a single lane closure on the outbound carriageway of Norton Avenue near Herdings/Leighton Road tram stop. 

Traffic wishing to cross the dual carriageway to turn right onto Leighton Road will be unable to do so. Traffic should follow the diversion to Lightwood roundabout and return along Norton Avenue to turn left onto Leighton Road. 

Journey may take longer than normal, particularly at peak times.

Further information will be provided to residents by Volker on behalf of South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. Diversions and road closures will be in place, please follow the signed diversion route. An interactive map of roadworks is available on the Sheffield City Council website.

Park and Ride

All Travel South Yorkshire Park and Ride sites will remain open during these works, offering free parking as usual.

Walking, Wheeling and Cycling
It may be quicker and more convenient to walk, wheel or cycle part of your journey to connect to services at a different stop.

Approximate walking times between affected tram stops:

  • Gleadless Townend to Herdings/Leighton Road: 9 minutes (645 meters)
  • Herdings/Leighton Road to Herdings Park: 8 Minutes (640 meters)

There are alternative travel options through the wider South Yorkshire bus network.

Support for residents and businesses

Letters have been sent to local residents and businesses notifying them in advance of these works. Contact details for our contractor VolkerRail have been provided.

Unfortunately these works will generate noise, and our contractor will be working 24 hours a day. VolkerRail will endeavour to reduce noise as much as possible.
