Recent and ongoing renewal works to improve your Supertram network

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is committed to keeping the Supertram system safe and reliable. To achieve this, we regularly invest in essential maintenance and renewal works across the network, from replacing track to improving tram stop facilities.

Over the summer, we have been working with our supply chain partners day and night to deliver improvements that protect the long-term future of the network and enhance customers’ travel experience.

Recently completed works

We’ve completed several key projects to keep your tram services running safely and efficiently:

  • Track renewal on Ridgeway Road – Between Manor Top and Hollinsend tram stops, we’ve replaced worn sections of rail to ensure a smoother, quieter ride
  • Track renewal on Norfolk Park Viaduct – Between Granville Road and Park Grange Croft tram stops, this work helps maintain safe operation and reliability on one of the most important structures on the network
  • Rail sealing polymer replacement – Near Park Grange tram stop, we replaced the material that seals the rails to reduce wear and help prevent water ingress, protecting the track for years to come
  • Poster case upgrades – Clear plastic panels in many tram stop poster cases have been replaced, improving visibility of timetables, maps, and service information for passengers

Ongoing and future works

Our renewal programme continues, with more projects scheduled across the network. This proactive maintenance reduces the risk of disruption, extends the lifespan of our infrastructure, and ensures we can continue delivering the high-quality service you expect.

We’d like to thank all our customers for their patience during these essential works. We always aim to keep disruption to a minimum, and your understanding helps us complete projects safely and efficiently.

SYMCA has committed to investing over £110m in the Supertram system by 2027, including upgrades to the trams, track, control systems and power supplies alongside the construction of the new Tram Train station at Magna.
