Supertram renewal works at Infirmary Road

Part of the Blue and Yellow routes will be affected from Sunday 26 to Friday 31 October

Essential works to improve your Supertram network will take place from Sunday 26 to Friday 31 October inclusive (6 days).

We'll complete track renewal works at Infirmary Road tram stop, helping to make your journey smoother and ensure continued reliability of our services.

Tram service

Travel during these works

Blue route

The Blue route between Malin Bridge and Shalesmoor for Kelham Island will be replaced by bus service BL1.

  • Trams operate between Halfway and Shalesmoor/Kelham Island.
  • Services operate at a normal frequency of up to every 12 minutes.
  • Replacement bus service BL1 will replace tram services in the affected area.

Yellow route

The Yellow route between Middlewood and Cathedral will be replaced by bus service YE1.

  • Trams operate between Meadowhall Interchange and Cathedral during the day.
  • After 8pm and on Sunday, Yellow route trams also extend beyond Cathedral to Shalesmoor for Kelham Island.
  • Services operate at a normal frequency of up to every 12 minutes.
  • Replacement bus service YE1 will replace tram services in the affected area.

Change between tram and replacement bus services at Castle Square during the day Monday to Friday, and at Shalesmoor/Kelham Island after 8pm and on Sunday.

BL1 and YE1 Bus

Supertram Replacement Bus Service

Replacement bus services BL1 and YE1 will provide a frequent and reliable connection to tram services, operating between Shalesmoor for Kelham Island and Middlewood and Malin Bridge. YE1 bus services will also extend to Castle Square/Cathedral during the day.

Change between tram and replacement bus services at Castle Square/Cathedral or Shalesmoor for Kelham Island.

  • Track your replacement bus: Use TSY Live Departures to see the location of your next replacement bus on a real-time map.
  • Timetabled to connect with trams: Services operate up to every 12 minutes (every 6 minutes combined), and are synced with tram service frequency throughout the day.
  • Express service: Buses only stop at specific bus stops which are located near to affected tram stops.
  • Travel with your tram ticket: Show any valid tram ticket purchased in advance using the TSY Mobile App or from a tram conductor. Tickets can also be purchased from the bus driver.

Speed up your journey by having your ticket ready to show the driver. You can also purchase a ticket using contactless card or cash when you board, just ask for a ticket like you would do from a tram conductor.

Bus only tickets are not accepted by the replacement bus service.

The renewal works taking place at Infirmary Road tram stop mean that buses will replace trams at the following stops:

  • Infirmary Road
  • Langsett/Primrose View
  • Bamforth Street
  • Hillsborough Interchange
  • Malin Bridge
  • Hillsborough Park
  • Leppings Lane
  • Middlewood

Trams will still operate across most of the Supertram network, with buses replacing trams in affected areas. Information about affected tram stops, replacement bus stop locations, and bus stop facilities and accessibility, is available in the sections below.

Changes to local transport

These renewal works will affect some roads and footpaths, but disruption is expected to be minimal for most people.

Walking icon

Walking

To enable these works to be completed safely, part of the pavement directly next to Infirmary Road tram stop (on the side of Tesco) will be closed, between Albert Terrace Road and Montgomery Terrace Road. Please access Tesco from entrance points on Albert Terrace Road or Montgomery Terrace Road. 

The other pavement (on the same side as Wynsor's Shoe Shop and Bedford Street) will remain open as normal.

No other footpath closures are expected to be required for these works.

Local buses

Local bus services will be diverted due the works taking place on Infirmary Road:

To accommodate the replacement bus services at Hillsborough Interchange, there will be temporary stand changes:

  • Services 18 and 18a (First Bus): From Sunday 26 to Friday 31 October inclusive, these services will depart from Hillsborough Interchange stand H3, located in the centre of the Interchange (instead of stand H4).

No other local bus services are expected be affected by these works, however localised traffic congestion may cause delays to nearby services.

Roads

Road users will be affected by traffic management measures on Infirmary Road, which are needed to ensure the works can be completed safely. Please follow the signed diversion route.

During the 6-day works, the total area affected will be on Infirmary Road between the junction with Montgomery Terrace Road and with Albert Terrace Road.

The side of the road towards Hillsborough will be closed at all times. Traffic will only be able to travel in one direction (away from Hillsborough, towards the city centre). Traffic towards Hillsborough will be diverted via Montgomery Terrace Road, Upperthorpe Road and Albert Terrace Road.

On Sunday 26 October only, the road will also be closed towards the city centre. Traffic in this direction will be diverted via Albert Terrace Road and Penistone Road.

Other travel options

Park and Ride

All Travel South Yorkshire Park and Ride sites will remain open during these works, offering free parking as usual. You may wish to consider alternatives to Malin Bridge and Middlewood Park and Ride during these works, such as Nunnery Square.

Walking, Wheeling and Cycling
It may be quicker and more convenient to walk, wheel or cycle part of your journey to connect to services at a different stop.

Free cycle parking is available at both Malin Bridge and Middlewood Park and Ride, and at Hillsborough Interchange.

Approximate walking times between affected tram stops:

  • Shalesmoor/Kelham Island to Infirmary Road: 6 minutes (450 metres)
  • Infirmary Road to Langsett/Primrose View: 11 minutes (700 metres)
  • Langsett/Primrose View to Bamforth Street: 8 minutes (550 metres)
  • Bamforth Street to Hillsborough Interchange: 8 minutes (600 metres)
  • Hillsborough Interchange to Malin Bridge: 9 minutes (600 metres)
  • Hillsborough Interchange to Hillsborough Park: 6 minutes (350 metres)
  • Hillsborough Park to Leppings Lane: 9 minutes (600 metres)
  • Leppings Lane to Middlewood: 12 minutes (800 metres)
Alternative Bus Services
There are alternative travel options through the wider South Yorkshire bus network.

It should be noted that during these works, Supertram tickets will not be accepted on local bus services, only the Supertram replacement bus.

Letters have been sent to local residents and businesses notifying them in advance of these works. Contact details for our contractor VolkerRail have been provided.

Unfortunately these works will generate noise, and our contractor will be working 24 hours a day. VolkerRail will endeavour to reduce noise as much as possible.
