Supertram brings time-saving Optibus system to South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire’s Supertram has implemented the Optibus software platform, strengthening its commitment to innovation and operational efficiency.

The move will bring Optibus Planning, Scheduling, Rostering, Operations, and Driver App to Supertram’s four tram routes across Sheffield and Rotherham, South Yorkshire, transporting 9 million passengers each year.

Supertram is the first tram operator in the UK, and among only a select few globally, to adopt Optibus, which is used by major bus networks in 35 countries. In the UK, Optibus supports and improves the management of more than 70% of buses nationwide.

Optibus’ AI-backed, cloud-native system has been designed to streamline operations, improve time management, and enhance convenience for operational staff and engineers. The technology will allow Supertram to create a more seamless, paperless, and efficient working environment, reflecting the company’s commitment to continuous improvement and technological advancement.

In addition, as part of the upgrade, Supertram invested in a resource and demand expert to create new staff rosters aligned with tram timetables and operational requirements. Various schedules were developed and trialled to find the most effective approach. These improvements were integrated into the Optibus system and launched alongside the new technology, supporting smoother operations and enhanced workforce management.

The addition of the Optibus Driver App helps centralise depot-driver communications and work information into a single digital platform, enabling staff to efficiently manage their schedules and complete tasks quickly. Designed to simplify daily operations, the app provides easy access to essential information, helping employees focus on their core responsibilities with greater ease and reduced stress.

“This new initiative is a testament to our ongoing investment in innovation and our dedication to providing the best possible service for our customers and employees,” said Supertram Head of Service Delivery, Trevor Stocker. “This positions Supertram at the forefront of operational excellence and also supports our shared vision of an integrated transport network across the region.”

“We are incredibly proud to partner with Supertram during this new chapter of their journey. Introducing new AI-driven tools to South Yorkshire’s light rail network will empower drivers with better, more balanced schedules and create a more streamlined operation that results in better service for passengers,” said Amos Haggiag, CEO and co-founder of Optibus.

Following testing during the recent temporary timetable, Supertram has now returned to its normal schedule and continues to operate with the Optibus system.
