Supertram is committed to the safety and wellbeing of both our colleagues and our customers. We want to make it clear that assaults, abuse, or antisocial behaviour of any kind towards our tram crews will not be tolerated.
Recently, an incident involving the assault of a Supertram conductor was taken to court. Thanks to swift action, the support of South Yorkshire Police and clear evidence captured on body-worn camera, the offender pleaded guilty and received a custodial sentence and was ordered to pay compensation.
This outcome demonstrates that such behaviour has serious consequences, and that Supertram will always stand by our staff and support prosecutions where our colleagues are targeted. It also highlights the importance of body-worn cameras in protecting both staff and customers, and the strength of our partnership working with South Yorkshire Police to ensure that offenders are held to account.
Sean English, Managing Director at Supertram, said:
“No one should come to work and face the risk of abuse or violence. This successful prosecution shows that we will always take a zero-tolerance approach and support our colleagues every step of the way. The safety of our staff and customers is our absolute priority.”
A Travelsafe Officer at South Yorkshire Police added:
“This case sends a clear message that abusive or violent behaviour on our transport network will not be accepted. Working closely with Supertram, we will continue to take action against offenders and ensure that both staff and passengers can feel safe when travelling.”
Our focus is on ensuring that both customers and staff feel safe and respected when travelling. Working closely with South Yorkshire Police, we continue to act on incidents of antisocial behaviour and support prosecutions where needed, so that everyone can travel with confidence.
