Community Transport services offer free travel for high priority groups to get to vaccination sites

Community Transport providers across South Yorkshire are offering a free return journey to a Covid-19 vaccination site to people who cannot access public transport and have no alternative.  Community Transport services are usually available at a subsidised price in South Yorkshire for people who find it difficult to use the public transport network.

Tim Taylor, Director of Customer Services at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, says:

“No one should miss the chance to have the vaccine because they have difficulty travelling to the vaccination site. During the national lockdown, while we’ve all been advised to stay at home wherever possible, Community Transport operators have been providing a limited Dial-a-Ride service for essential trips. So, we decided to use this vital resource to support people in need across South Yorkshire and make a contribution to the region’s vaccination effort.”  

To take advantage of this service, please call your local provider first – there are dedicated services available in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

 “Once you have your vaccine appointment, just give us a call to make a free booking. Try to give us as much notice as possible and at least one or two days before the journey itself”, says Ian Jenkinson of Sheffield Community Transport, on behalf of all local operators.

 “All Community Transport services use fully accessible vehicles and can pick up passengers directly from their homes. We’ll work hard to accommodate as many people as possible, but places are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.”
