Essential improvements completed at Gleadless Townend
Over the May half-term, from 23 to 31 May 2026, engineering teams completed a major track renewal project at Gleadless Townend as part of the ongoing £110 million investment programme being delivered on behalf of South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).
What work was carried out?
During the closure, specialist teams replaced key sections of track at Gleadless Townend, including a crossing point and track switches that help guide trams safely through one of the network's busiest junctions.
This type of infrastructure works incredibly hard every day, carrying thousands of tram journeys each week. Replacing it before it reaches the end of its life helps reduce the need for unplanned repairs and future disruption.
The project involved removing existing track components and installing brand-new replacements, with teams working around the clock to complete the work safely and efficiently.

These improvements will help make journeys:
- More reliable by reducing the risk of unplanned closures and future repairs
- Much smoother through renewed track that improves ride comfort
- Safer with upgraded track and road surfaces for trams, motorists and pedestrians
The project also saw the introduction of new equipment and installation methods, helping teams work more efficiently while reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable approach to maintaining the network.
