Barnsley MiCard celebrates over 1 million fare-free journeys

Part of Barnsley’s Great Childhoods Ambition, MiCard gives 5–18‑year‑olds living in the borough the freedom to travel for free on buses anywhere in South Yorkshire, as long as the journey starts or ends in Barnsley.

1,000,000 Journeys Made Using Barnsley MiCard!

It’s helping young people get to school, college, work, sports, friends, family - and all the places that matter. And it’s already making a real difference:
  • Nearly 18,000 young people now have a MiCard.

  • Total travel by children and young people in Barnsley is up 63%.

  • 63% of all MiCard journeys are helping the families who need it most.

  • The 66 bus between Barnsley and Elsecar is still the most popular route.

The scheme is funded by £5 million from Barnsley Council, with up to £1 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, and all local bus operators - including Stagecoach, Globe Holidays, South Pennine Community Transport, Hodgsons Travel, Chad Healey European, LL Travel and Wilfreda Beehive - are taking part.
