Supertram leading the way in light rail safety education

South Yorkshire Supertram has marked the successful completion of its first year as the UK’s first light rail operator to join the pioneering Rail Safe Friendly initiative, delivered by Learn Live.

We’ve reached more than 6,400 young people in the project’s first year.

Launched as a one-year programme, this ground-breaking partnership targeted 10 schools across Sheffield, focusing on delivering vital travel safety messages to children. Through engaging, age-appropriate videos for both primary and secondary pupils, the initiative has reinforced crucial safety guidance and promoted a culture of awareness around trams and tramways.

Supertram’s support enabled 10 local schools, selected for their proximity to the tram network, to access the Rail Safe Friendly programme, providing them with expert resources and support.

One highlight of the initiative was a specially produced educational video featuring a Supertram conductor, who offered practical advice on staying safe around trams.

The results speak for themselves. Over the course of the first 12 months, the programme reached 6,421 young people across all 10 sponsored schools. The project also generated an impressive £181,585.88 in social value, underlining the positive impact of proactive safety education.

Supertram is also supporting the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board’s (LRSSB) National Safety Campaign “TWO LINES = STOP” by displaying safety signs across the network, near schools and universities, to further promote tram safety.

“These collaborations demonstrate Supertram’s ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of our passengers and the wider community,” said Wayne Clay, Head of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) at Supertram, adding, “We look forward to our continued partnership with Learn Live and LRSSB, and hope it paves the way for a more informed, safety-conscious generation.”
