Supertram network improvements planned over summer school holidays

Further investment into the Supertram system will take place during the summer school holidays to enhance and future proof the network, improving the service for the millions of customers who use the network every year.

It follows a commitment by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to invest over £110m by 2027 including upgrades to the trams, track, control systems and power supplies alongside the construction of a new Tram Train station at Magna.

Works to replace track on Ridgeway Road, between Manor Top and Hollinsend tram stops, will start after the Tramlines Festival weekend on Monday 28 July, with tram services resuming in this area on Saturday 16 August. The works will affect Blue Route and Purple Route tram services.

Works will also be taking place on Park Grange Road to repair the concrete surfacing and sealant around the rails. Information relating to these works, along with other network improvements are available at www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/NetworkImprovements

A SYMCA spokesperson said: “These works are part of SYMCA’s ongoing investment in Supertram. By scheduling works over the summer and school holidays when the tram network has lower passenger numbers, we hope to minimise any passenger and traffic disruption and keep people moving while this work progresses.

“We have successfully completed work recently on sections of track in Birley, Hillsborough, Gleadless and Langsett Road. By investing in the Supertram system, we’re increasing the longevity of the region’s tram network and ensuring the safe operation of this popular service for the millions of people who use it every year.”

Rail replacement works along Ridgeway Road and concrete repairs on Park Grange Road:

The rail replacement works are essential to replace worn rails which will ensure trams can continue to operate safely for years to come. The new rails will give passengers a better travel experience by improving comfort, reducing noise, and reducing the risk of unplanned closures on the network. The repairs to the concrete surface on Park Grange Road will improve the condition of the surface, improving the highway environment for other road users including cyclists.
To allow the essential engineering works to take place, tram services will be subject to alteration from Monday 28 July to Friday 15 August inclusive.

Granville Road, Park Grange Croft, Park Grange, Arbourthorne Road, Spring Lane, Manor Top, Hollinsend, Herdings/Leighton Road and Herdings Park tram stops will not be served during this time.

The Supertram network will run a revised timetable, and services will operate as follows:

  • Blue Route tram services will run a revised route and timetable with services running between:
    • Malin Bridge and Sheffield Station, operating at the normal frequency of up to every 12 minutes
    • Halfway and Gleadless Townend, operating at a frequency of up to every 15 minutes
  • Purple Route tram services will be suspended
  • Yellow Route tram services will run as normal
  • Tram Train services will run as normal except on Saturday evenings whilst the construction works for the new Magna Tram Train Station and Park & Ride facility take place. Visit our travel website for more details.

Dedicated tram replacement bus service

A dedicated tram replacement bus service will operate to help people make their journeys between Monday 28 July and Friday 15 August inclusive.

The BP1 bus service will run between Fitzalan Square, in the city centre and Herdings Park, via Gleadless Townend, up to every 15 minutes, serving limited bus stops located near all the affected tram stops along the route.

All valid tram and multi-modal tickets will be accepted for travel on the BP1 replacement bus service. Customers can buy their ticket in advance using the TSY Mobile app, or from a tram conductor. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased from the BP1 bus driver using contactless card or cash payments when boarding.

You can view the revised timetables on the Manor Top service update page or use our online Timetable Finder.

Tramlines Festival – Hillsborough Park – Friday 25, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July

A full service will be operational across the Supertram network during the Tramlines Festival at Hillsborough Park, with festival goers urged to use public transport to travel to and from the festival.

A normal tram service will run throughout the weekend, however Blue and Yellow route services heading towards Malin Bridge and Middlewood will terminate at Shalesmoor from around 21:30 on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July and around 20:30 on Sunday 27 July. This is due to road closures in the Hillsborough area put in place to ensure people can safely leave the festival.

Following the end of the event, special event trams will run from Leppings Lane tram stop to Sheffield City Centre. During this time, the tram stops beyond Shalesmoor will remain closed until such a time that crowds have dispersed and roads reopened.

The latest information and travel advice over the festival weekend are available on our Tramlines webpage.
