Community event celebrates Swinton Rail Station

“We wanted to showcase the fantastic work done by the group Friends of Swinton Station, while bringing people together and celebrating Swinton’s character and heritage”, says Community Rail Officer Cathrine Ashworth, who organised the event. “We also wanted to showcase how SYMCA supports the community and I’m pleased to say that, despite the bad weather, we saw a good turnout of people”.

Among the enhancements unveiled during the event were a mural welcoming people to Swinton, an art exhibition with pieces from students of Swinton Academy in the station’s waiting room and a new upcycled train-themed insect hotel.

“It was a relaxed jovial atmosphere, where attendees had a chance to chat to the people involved in the projects and the railways, see all the station enhancements and enjoy hot drinks and cake! The Chapeltown Station group was so impressed with the mural, that they’re planning to engage with Artworks, the organisation behind it, to feature something similar in Chapeltown.”

“The event also gave us a chance to celebrate how the community got together around the station. The insect hotel was created by Casting Innovations, a social enterprise that supports the environment by reducing landfill, and local veterans by running workshops for them. The mural was designed and produced by ArtWorks, a non- profit organisation that inspires and helps adults with learning difficulties to develop life skills through creative workshops and projects. GCSE Art students from Swinton Academy produced a series of eight pieces exploring ideas of local heritage, urban landscape and the railways, which are now hanging in the waiting room”.

The event was hosted by local councillor Ken Wyatt and the Chair of Friends of Swinton Station, Alan Jones.
