Youth Rail Discovery Trip Builds Confidence and Opportunities

Young people from Rotherham Opportunities College recently took part in a Youth Rail Discovery Trip to Cleethorpes, celebrating inclusive travel as part of Community Rail Week 2026 and bringing to life this year’s theme of “Journeys for All.”

The trip provided young people with SEND a fully supported opportunity to experience rail travel, broaden their horizons, and develop new skills in a safe and welcoming environment. Throughout the day, participants were encouraged to explore, learn, and express themselves, both independently and as part of a group. With tailored, inclusive support in place, everyone was able to engage confidently and participate in activities in a way that reflected their individual needs and abilities.

As part of the experience, participants built confidence using trains and navigating stations, while also developing a greater understanding of how to stay safe when travelling. Opportunities to interview invited rail professionals offered valuable insight into careers within the rail industry, helping to inspire aspiration and build awareness of future pathways.

Community volunteers played a vital role in the success of the day, creating a warm, supportive atmosphere that helped participants feel at ease from the outset. Their encouragement and positive engagement ensured that all young people felt included, valued, and supported throughout the journey.

The day struck a careful balance between independence and structured learning. Participants enjoyed the sense of freedom that comes with travelling to a coastal destination, while also taking part in creative workshops delivered by TickArt, alongside onboard interactive activities, including creating a personalised safeguarding toolkit, and transport themed games. This combination of experiences contributed to a positive, engaging, and memorable day for all involved.

This collaborative project was led by SYMCA and Railway Children, with support from TransPennine Express.

The success of this pilot highlights the powerful role that rail can play in connecting young people to new opportunities, building confidence and independence, and supporting inclusive access to destinations across South Yorkshire and beyond.
