Changes to bus and tram services over Easter

Bus and tram services will be subject to change over Easter weekend as South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) continues to invest in the Supertram system.

The works, which will run from Friday 18 April until Sunday 20 April, will begin on Langsett Road near Hillsborough Interchange to replace worn tram track with work also taking place to repair the concrete track bed at Hillsborough Corner and to replace the track on Middlewood Road, near Middlewood Park and Ride.

Due to the location of the works buses will divert around the closures and Blue and Yellow route trams will also be affected. Signed diversion routes will be in place for road users in the affected areas.

This follows the endorsement of the Supertram Business Plan at the SYMCA Board in March, which saw a commitment to invest over £110m by 2027 including upgrades to trams, track, control systems and power supplies alongside the construction of a new Tram Train Station at Magna.

The rail replacement works are essential to replace worn rails which will ensure trams can continue to operate safely for years to come. The new rails will give passengers a better travel experience by improving comfort, reducing noise, and reducing the risk of unplanned closures on the network.

A SYMCA spokesperson said:

"These works are part of SYMCA’s ongoing investment in Supertram. By scheduling works at times when the tram and bus network have lower passenger numbers, we hope to minimise any passenger and traffic disruption and keep people moving while this work progresses.

“By investing in the Supertram system, we’re increasing the longevity of the region’s tram network and ensuring the safe operation of this popular service for the millions of people who use it every year.”

Bus changes

Bus services in North Sheffield near Hillsborough will be subject to change from Friday 18 April until Sunday 20 April due to the planned engineering works which means buses will be unable to access Hillsborough Interchange.

Local bus services will stop at alternative and temporary bus stops along the diversion routes.

Customers are advised to plan ahead and visit the Travel South Yorkshire website where all details can be found on the planned bus changes.

Bus services will return to normal on Monday 21st April.

Supertram changes

Blue and Yellow route services will be affected between Friday 18 April and Sunday 20 April. At the same time, changes will continue on Saturday evenings to Tram Train services to accommodate the construction of the new Tram Train station at Magna.

Infirmary Road, Langsett/Primrose View, Bamforth Street, Hillsborough Interchange, Hillsborough Park, Leppings Lane, Middlewood and Malin Bridge tram stops will not be served during this time.

The Supertram network will run a revised timetable, and services will operate as follows:
  • Blue route tram services will run a revised route and timetable between Shalesmoor/Kelham Island and Halfway only, operating at the normal frequency of up to every 12 minutes
  • Yellow route tram services will run a revised route and timetable between Cathedral and Meadowhall only (early morning, evening, and Sunday journeys will extend to Shalesmoor/Kelham Island) operating at the normal frequency of up to every 12 minutes
These works won’t affect any other tram routes.

Dedicated tram replacement bus services, BL1, YE1 and YE2 will operate to help people make their journeys between Friday 18 April and Sunday 20 April inclusive, providing a combined frequency of up to every six minutes to serve affected stops.

All valid tram and multi-modal tickets will be accepted for travel. Customers can buy their ticket in advance using the TSY mobile app or from a tram conductor.

Customers are advised to plan ahead and check before they travel online at travelsouthyorkshire.com/NetworkImprovements, by calling Traveline on 0800 952 0002 or via Supertram and Travel South Yorkshire social media channels.

Blue and Yellow route tram services will return to normal on Monday 21st April.

Further areas of rail replacement will be undertaken throughout the year as part of the investment programme.
