Supertram joins Women in Transport and welcomes Regional Lead appointment

Here at Supertram, we’re proud to share our corporate membership with Women in Transport (WiT), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to advancing gender equity across the transport industry and empowering women to maximise their potential.
The partnership reflects Supertram’s ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive, diverse, and supportive workplace, while strengthening links with the wider transport sector. Our membership with WiT provides colleagues with access to industry events, networking, and professional development opportunities.

New Regional Lead appointment
As part of this milestone, we are also delighted to share that Megan Burns, Head of People & Development at Supertram, has recently been appointed Regional Lead for the Women in Transport Yorkshire Branch.
Alongside her role at Supertram, Megan will help manage regional activity, support partnerships across Yorkshire, and champion initiatives that promote inclusion, visibility, and opportunities for women working and seeking a career in the transport sector.
Sonya Byers, CEO at Women in Transport, said:
"We are thrilled to welcome Supertram as a new partner of Women in Transport. Yorkshire is one of our fastest-growing regions, now with over 100 members, and this
partnership marks an exciting step forward in strengthening our network across South Yorkshire. We are equally delighted to announce the appointment of Megan Burns, Head of People & Development at Supertram, as our new volunteer Regional Lead for Yorkshire. We look forward to working closely with Supertram to champion diversity and support the women shaping the future of transport in Yorkshire."
Q&A with Megan Burns
We caught up with Megan to talk about her career, the importance of representation, and what this partnership means for Supertram colleagues.
Q: How long have you worked in the transport industry, and what attracted you to it?
I’ve worked in the transport sector for almost 2 years, which has absolutely flown by. Having spent most of my career working in and around South Yorkshire, working in transport felt like a great opportunity to be part of something that really matters to the surrounding communities.
For me, transport is about much more than simply getting from A to B; it affects how people access their jobs, education and services, and plays an important role in our local economy and future sustainability.
Q: What has helped you build confidence and progress your career within the transport sector?
People and culture have played a huge role in building my confidence and career development over the years. I’m fortunate to work with fantastic teams across Supertram, and it’s one of the most passionate and committed workforces I’ve worked with.
For me, confidence grows with time and experience, being supported and constructively challenged by those around me, and by actively seeking opportunities to keep learning. I firmly believe we’re never the finished article. Building strong partnerships and networks is also an important part of development; whether that’s cross-functionally within your organisation, connecting with others locally in your area of specialism, or through networks such as Women in Transport.
Women in Transport in particular offers a wide range of opportunities that help to empower its members and support their next career steps, from CV workshops and coaching to formal mentoring programmes, networking events and virtual coffee meets. At Supertram, we’re committed to creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels supported to develop, and understand how that environment can make a real difference to how people grow and progress in their careers.
Q: How will this membership support colleagues at Supertram?
Through our corporate membership, we can offer Supertram colleagues access to a range of benefits including industry events, professional development opportunities, mentoring, and a strong national and regional network. These opportunities will help colleagues build connections, share initiatives, and support personal and professional development.
Q: What does your role with Women in Transport look like for you, and what advice would you give to someone thinking about the transport sector?
We have a strong and well-established Women in Transport membership across Yorkshire, with some great new partnerships, including Supertram, and I’m really looking forward to building on that momentum. One of the real strengths of the transport industry, as I’ve particularly found within light rail, is how openly we share best practice and support one another. We face many of the same challenges and opportunities, and by working collaboratively we really are stronger together.
Particularly close to my heart is the work commissioned by Women in Transport on the Equity Index. It’s a powerful tool for driving change and challenging ourselves - and our organisations - to think and act differently to support the growth and representation of women across the sector.
As an HR professional, I’m also passionate about career development and supporting those who are early in their careers or new to the sector. Transport is an exciting industry with significant change and investment happening across the country, and it offers genuine long-term career opportunities. At Supertram, we’re focused on developing clear career pathways across all roles, so colleagues can see a career with us, not just a role.
My advice to anyone considering a career in transport would be to be curious, get involved, and make the most of networks like Women in Transport, which offer great support, insight and opportunities to grow. For more information about Supertram’s memberships, visit our About Us page >
