Things to do in Sheffield and Rotherham
Whilst we can’t promise great weather, we can help with some great suggestions for days out to help keep the family entertained.
We’ve compiled a selection a selection of family friendly days out in Sheffield and Rotherham. They won’t break your budget and even better, they’re all accessible using Supertram.
Whether it’s a rainy day, sunny day, or just warm enough to hang out in the park day, hopefully you’ll find a few things here to keep your big kids, little kids, or the whole family entertained.

Things to do on Rainy Days
IKEA
Perfect for a rainy day. Weave your way through the aisles, whether searching for inspiration for kids’ bedrooms, storage, or simply collecting those tealights and things things you never you knew you needed.
Stop : Carbrook , just a couple of minutes’ walk from the stop
Centertainment
With Hollywood Bowl, Cineworld and Laser Quest, and a range of great places to eat, there’s plenty of options to keep the family entertained. A great day out for little kid and big kids too. For younger children Monkey Bizness is a great option to let them run wild, while parents watch from the comfort of the café.
With the Cineworld family ticket, adult’s pay kid’s price, plus there’s additional savings on popcorn and drinks.

Rock Up, Meadowhall
With drop-in sessions, it’s really easy to rock up and climb. With a range of options to suit different ages, it’s a great way to burn off their energy. If they absolutely love it, there’s 12-week climbing courses, with the Rockstar NICAS course for 6+ and Wild Climbers Course for ages 3-5. Located in Meadowhall, just over the interchange footbridge.

Become a firefighter for the day
Under 5s can drive the fire engine, wear the uniform and, most importantly, put the fires out! They’ll also learn about how to stay safe when there is a fire and what number to call. Plus, a story and some songs too.

Rotherham Minister
For a bit of history, you can take a trip to this ornate 14th century church with not 1, not 2, but 12 bells! With their social supermarket, catch up cafe, singing group, and concert events, there’s always something going on at Rotherham Minster.

Magna Science and Adventure Centre
A great day out with interactive exhibits. Split over 4 experiences: air, earth, fire and water, children can experience everything from operating a JCB, blasting a quarry, and even melt steel in a model furnace. There’s also an adventure playground, a summer splash park and a range of events happening over the summer holidays.

Parkgate Shopping Centre
Can you beat a summer shopping spree? You’ll find plenty to do at Parkgate, with a range of shops, as well as restaurants for a midday refuel. With its own tram stop, you can hop off and be straight in the midst of it all. There are also plenty of activities nearby like Jump Inc, Wacky Warehouse, and a toddler play space.

Grimm & Co, Rotherham
Enter for a world of wonder and enchantment. Plenty for children of all ages, from climbing the giant’s bookcase into Grizelda’s Trove of Twists, Tales and Trinkets and the Apothecary selling traditional & unconventional remedies, spells, curses, and cures. A registered charity that supports children and young people with skills in creativity, a truly magical day out with a difference.

Things to do on Sunny Days
Sheffield by the Seaside
25 July - 26 August 2024
Cost: Free
Picture blue skies and feel the beach vibes. Grab your sun cream, bucket and spade and head down to the Peace Gardens in Sheffield, for a fun filled day. There’s plenty to keep children of all ages entertained, from fairground rides and games, a giant sandpit, water fountains to splash in, even visiting dinosaurs and TV/film characters. Sheffield Bricktropolis
3-18 August 2024
Cost: Free
If you fancy a wild adventure, this safari trail is for you. With over half a million LEGObricks, there are 17 animal sculptures across the city. To help you navigate, Safari trail maps are available from ‘Brick Central’ (Surrey Street by the Peace Gardens) from Saturday 3rd August, or you can download from their website. Printed maps are £1, which gives you entry into a prize draw to win a two-night stay in LEGOLAND® Windsor.

Eat Treat & Moor
10-11 August 2024
A celebration of all thing’s food, drink. Whether you’re a sweet tooth or have a more savoury palette, with over 30 food & drink stalls there’ll be plenty to tantalise your taste buds. From tasting sessions, food demonstrations to learn new techniques and recipes from local chefs and sampling to the Tasty Treats Treasure Hunt, there’s plenty to keep the family entertained.

Devonshire Green Festival
Saturday 24 August 12-8pm
Cost: Free
Organised by Little Hummingbird Events, this festival offers a family friendly day out. It’s a relaxed day, supporting local crafts, street food, set to the backdrop of music from Sheffield DJs. Free to attend, get ready for a chilled day in music.
Stop : Valley Castle Square or Cathedral. The Moor is a 5-minute walk from the tram.
Sheffield Fayre
Monday 26 August 10.30 – 17.00
Cost: Free
In its 21st year, this event is a firm family favourite, set in one of Sheffield’s many parks, on the outskirts of the city centre. Free to attend, enjoy the fun fair, kids crafts, trade stands, board games corner, birds of prey displays and of course, food and drink stalls to keep you energised.

Rock N Roll Circus
29 August - 1 Sept 2024
Multi-day festival of live music and circus entertainment. The music line up includes Richard Hawley, Becky Hill, The Divine Comedy, The Coral and Jake Bugg. If you fancy running off to join the circus, there are circus workshops you can join too, with a food and drink village to keep you festival ready. For tickets click here
Park Days on the Tram
Norfolk Heritage Park
Victorian park, close to Sheffield city centre providing, perfect for action packed play days, or more relaxed soak up some sun days. It boasts great play and sport facilities, with so much more to offer than swings: including trampolines, a toddler bike track, and football pitches, you can even try your skills at kettle drum, If you’re feeling adventurous, the woodland play area offers climbing, zip line, and a cantilever swing. Free to enter and free parking, it’s a fab day out.
Hillsborough Park
More than just green space, Hillsborough offers impressive play facilities and lovely views too. A playground with great set of activities for both toddlers and juniors, and a climbing forest for older children and teenagers, plus tennis courts, running routes and cycle track. If that wears you out, the Depot Bakery café is open 7 days a week offering light bites, lunches and cakes.

Rivelin Valley
A wonderful place that once you discover, you’ll no doubt want to go back. You can enjoy exploring in the trees, paddling in the river, crossing the stepping stones, or play poo sticks in the river. There’s also a nature trail that follows the path of the river, stretching for over 2 miles. Just be sure to visit the café before venturing out!
Clifton Park
A park with a difference, with museum, fun park, mini golf, watersplash and even the Clifton Express train, or simply just enjoy time in the park. How to get there: Tram Train – Rotherham Central. It’s a 15 minute walk to Clifton Park, a scenic route through the town and past Rotherham Minster.
