A guide for train customers with disabilities or restricted mobility.
Rail services provide vital links around South Yorkshire and beyond. They are operated by a variety of different operators, and there are numerous features available to make travelling on the railways easier for all.
Cheaper rail fares
Concessionary fare passes, such as the Mobility Pass, are valid within South Yorkshire, and on some journeys outside the county.
If you have a disability that makes travelling by rail difficult, you may also be eligible for a Disabled Person’s Railcard, which will offer savings on many more journeys.
Accessible train stations
Most rail stations across South Yorkshire are accessible to all. At some stations, staff are available to offer assistance. At smaller, unstaffed stations, on-train staff are able to offer assistance for people who may need help boarding or leaving the train. For example all Northern Rail services carry a ramp.
Passengers requiring assistance on Northern Rail services are advised to contact Northern Customer Relations at least 24 hours in advance of travel.
Passengers who wish to travel to or from an inaccessible station will be advised of the nearest accessible station they could use as an alternative.
The National Rail Enquiries website has a range of information for disabled passengers available. This includes information on taking powered mobility scooters onto trains.
All rail operators have helpful information about using their services, including a Disabled Persons Protection Policy, on their websites.
South Yorkshire is served by five different rail operators:
- Cross Country - offering links from Doncaster and Sheffield across the country.
- East Midlands Trains - linking Sheffield to London, the East Midlands, the North West and East Anglia.
- National Express East Coast - providing services from Doncaster to London, the North East and Scotland.
- Northern Rail - providing local services around South Yorkshire and beyond.
- TransPennine Express - calling at Sheffield, Meadowhall and Doncaster en route from Manchester to the East Coast.
