Bus
Buses are great because you don't have to go too far to fnd one. If you catch a bus to school, you might travel on a regular bus, which anyone can use. So you could be catching the bus with people going to work, your local police officer, or Gran heading off to the bingo.
Or you might get a special bus that is just for schools - they're like other buses, but only school children use them so they help to make sure everyone gets to class on time.
Buses are a great way to get around outside school time too, there's loads of cool places you can get to on a bus.
Train
If you live further away from your school, you might use the train to get there. Trains are good because they're quick and safe. On most trains you'll see a train conductor, who is there to check tickets and to help make sure you have a safe journey. If your sports team is playing an away game in South Yorkshire, use the train to help beat the traffic. Think about a day at one of South Yorkshire's shopping centres, without your parents having to worry about parking at the shops!
Tram
Do you live in Sheffield? Have you used the tram? It's one of the fastest ways to get around the city, so you might want to give it a try if there's a stop near your school. Trams stop near a lot of Sheffield's main attractions - Sheffield has 60km of tramline. Take your friends for a ride too, each tram can carry 250 people, the same as around 60 cars!
Walking
Have you tried walking to school? If you don't live too far from your school, why not give it a go? It's fun and safe, and helps you to keep you fit! You can walk with a parent or carer, or with your friends. Your school might have a 'walking bus' which means that you can get together with other people from your school and walk together with an adult.
Why is it good to walk instead of get in the car? You can see all sorts of things on the way, it helps you to stay fit, it's good for the environment, and you can spend more time with your friends.
Cycling
Do you have a bike? Lots of us do, but we don't always use them that much! Cycling can be a quick way to get to school. If you're going to cycle to school, you need to think about planning a safe route to school with your friends and check it with an adult.
Out of school a bike is a brilliant way of getting around too. It's quick and good exercise, and hopping on a bike instead of getting in a car can help to reduce climate change.
Reasons to get Onboard public transport...
It gives you freedom - No need to ask mum or dad for a lift everywhere, catch up with your friends, go to the cinema or the shops in town by bus, tram or train instead!
It’s safe - You are more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident in a car than on public transport. CCTV cameras are on buses, trams and trains for added safety.
It’s clean and green - Less than 3% of road CO² emissions comes from buses. On trams and trains it’s even less. So using the bus, tram and train are much better for the world around you.
It’s quicker for all - Fewer cars on the school run means less traffic and boring traffic jams, meaning we all get to where we are going a lot faster.
It’s great value - Use your MegaTravel card to travel for just 60p on the bus or tram and half fare on local rail fares on the train.
It's safer outside schools - Fewer cars parked on the roads mean you don’t have to dodge the traffic to get into school.
