Staying safe tips

  • Getting to and from school should be safe, easy and fun.

If you use the bus, tram or train, or you walk or cycle, it’s important that you feel safe and happy.

What can you do if something is wrong?

Most people enjoy their journey to school. But if something is wrong, then don’t keep it to yourself. There are things that you can do about it:

If someone is making you feel scared or upset, try to sit near the driver, or tell a conductor.

Make sure you tell your parents, carer or a teacher as soon as you can. If you are being bullied, your parents should tell the school. They can also tell the bus company or Travel South Yorkshire or the police.

Top tips for staying safe on your journey

    • If you’re nervous, see if you can get friends to walk home from the bus stop with you, or ask someone from your family to meet you.
    • Don’t flash your mobile phone or MP3 player about
    • Think about your safety – if it’s dark when you get off at your stop or station, make sure you stick to well lit areas.
    • If you feel unsafe go into a shop and ask them if you can wait there while you phone your parents to meet you
    • If something happens, keep a note of who does and says what, and who else was there.

Remember, if you, or anyone else is being bullied or having other problems on their journey report it to the driver, conductor, your school, the police or through this website. You won’t even have to give your name.
