The majority of buses in South Yorkshire now have low accessible floors, making them fully accessible for your needs. Every fully accessible bus can accommodate one ‘reference sized’ wheelchair.
A ‘reference sized’ wheelchair has a maximum length of 1200mm and a maximum width of 700mm. Please check your wheelchair specifications before boarding an accessible bus. Have a look at the low floor bus services in South Yorkshire, which gives details about services usually operated by fully accessible, low floor buses which can be accessed in a wheelchair.
The Confederation of Passenger Transport and the Department for Transport recently launched the Scooter Permit scheme, designed to give users of mobility scooters clarity on using their scooters on bus services. The scheme will enable users to take their scooters on the designated low-floor buses of participating operators, providing they have been issued with a permit. For more information, download a leaflet about the Scooter Permit scheme. (PDF)In order to get a permit, passengers will need to have a Class 2 scooter* that is no larger than 1000mm long, 600mm wide, with a turning radius no greater than 1200mm. A free, simple assessment will be conducted by a participating bus operator. The weight of the scooter (including user) is also taken into consideration and must be no more than 300kg (47 Stone). These requirements are designed to ensure that a scooter can fit in the designated space on board all accessible low-floor buses and can board in a safe and controlled manner. In South Yorkshire, Arriva, First South Yorkshire and Stagecoach have signed up to the scheme and will be offering assessments and issuing passes to those who meet the specification outlined above. Anyone wishing to apply for a permit needs to contact the appropriate operator. Please call the numbers below for more details.
