The English National Concession Travel Pass

ENCTS CardConcessionary travel is free for English senior citizens and disabled people on local buses across England this includes trams in South Yorkshire.  Free train travel is available for South Yorkshire concessionaires within the established boundaries.

Important notice: If you are disabled your pass may expire between April 2010 and March 2011. If this is the case, we recommend that you apply for a replacement four weeks before the expiry date, as we may need to refer you back to your local council so they can confirm your entitlement.

Who qualifies

From 6 April 2010 the qualifying age for English National Concession Travel (ENCT) pass will no longer be 60 years old.

If you live in South Yorkshire and are of eligible age, you can apply for the English National Concession Travel Pass. 

  • If you are born after 5 April 1950 and before 6 April 1955 you will become eligible for concessionary travel between your 60th and 65th birthdays. Your precise age of eligibility will depend on your individual date of birth
  • If you are born after 5 April 1955 you will not become eligible for concessionary travel until you are 65 or older.
  • If you are born before 6 April 1950 you are still eligible for concessionary travel from you 60th birthday.

Pass validity 

In South Yorkshire, the senior citizen's pass can be used to obtain free travel from 0900 on weekdays, all day at weekends and on Bank Holidays.

In other parts of England you can use it to travel free on local bus services (not train or tram) between 0930 and 2300 on weekdays, all day at weekends and on Bank Holidays.

In South Yorkshire, disabled person's passes can be used for free travel all day.

How to get the pass

Applying for the first time

Please visit a Travel South Yorkshire Information Centre and take with you:

  • Proof of your address
  • Proof of you age

If you are applying for a pass as a disabled person you also need to bring your Letter of Eligibility.  This is issued by your District Council.  For details please see the information leaflet above.

Alternatively, you can apply by post using this form. Please enclose the above items and a recent passport size photograph.  Send your application to:

If you apply in person at an Information Centre and do not bring a passport size photograph with you, our staff will be happy to take your picture free of charge with a web camera.

Replacing Lost or Stolen Pass

Renewing Expired Pass

If your pass has expired or is due to expire, you can request a renewal by visiting a Travel Information Centre or calling Traveline on 01709 51 51 51 up to a month before the expiry date.

Please note that if you are renewing a disabled pass, we may need to refer you to your local District Council for confirmation of your continuous entitlement.

If your appearance has significantly changed since your last pass was issued we recommend that you provide a new photograph or visit an Information Centre to have your photograph taken.
