Manvers Shuttle service

The problem

Case StudiesPoor public transport services in the Dearne Valley area meant business ventures were struggling to attract new workers and Dearne Valley College new students.

Action

We organised the Manvers 200 Shuttle Bus service.

The 200 service, which is operated by Stagecoach Yorkshire buses, runs daily from Mexborough, Swinton and Wath areas to Manvers every 20 minutes. In July 2008, the route was extended to serve Old Moor (for the Wetlands Conservation area) and West Melton.

Outcome

In its first year of service it carried more than 170,000 passengers.

Northern General Hospital

The problem

Too many people required car parking spaces and there simply wasn't space for them all.

Action

A Travel Survey was carried out, and the hospital reorganised the car parking ratio - 500 of the 1,200 spaces went to staff, the rest to visitors. Fewer staff were given essential car parking status. Public transport information was made available to staff and visitors on timetable racks throughout the hospital. A direct telephone link to Traveline was installed, and there were regular Travel Awareness Shows. Staff were allowed time to access the Journey Planner service on the internet.

All new employees are issued with a Personalised Travel Plan. A pool car has been supplied for business use, and with the help of the Travel Advice service, a shuttle bus service (Route HO1) runs to/from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. All staff members can use it free of charge.

Outcome

Because patient records and x-rays can now be passed easily between the two sites, the shuttle bus is playing an important role in reducing expenditure on taxi hire and private mileage allowance. All the travel measures have allowed employees to be less reliant on the car.
