Information for parents

This is a guide for parents of children who travel to and from school by public transport.

South Yorkshire's safety record for the transport of school students is excellent, whether on dedicated school services or as part of the commercial public transport network. It's a record we're proud of, and to keep things safe, students, parents, schools and operators need to work together.

If the journey to and from school is planned and carried out with care, it means children are in the best state of mind to get the most from their education.

Code of Conduct for parents/guardians

  • Make sure your child knows the safest route to and from the bus stop.
  • Always make sure your child is punctual and gets safely to and from the authorised pick up point (usually the bus or tram stop).
  • If your child has a MegaTravel Pass make sure they carry it with them at all times – if they don’t have a pass they will be charged the full fare.
  • Make sure they carry their Zero Fare Pass or Mobility Pass as appropriate.
  • Smoking is not allowed on buses, trains and trams.
  • Ensure your child knows how to behave sensibly on and around public transport.
  • You may be held responsible for any vandalism caused by your child whilst on public transport, and you are likely to have to meet the cost of repair.
  • Transport operators have the right to withdraw services, or may refuse transport to any offenders.

Behaviour on public transport

The journey to and from school is an important part of the school day for any pupil.  If this is planned and carried out with care then your child should have a hassle free journey.

Pupils are responsible for their own conduct when travelling on public transport.  It is, however, vitally important to have the full support of parents in order to maintain good behaviour since parents have a key role to ensure their child is aware of the importance of appropriate behaviour on school transport.

Bus and tram operators have fitted CCTV to many of their vehicles, these produce excellent digital footage which helps tackle any behavioural issues that may occur on public transport.

Parents and guardians are requested to take time to read through and consider these simple rules with their child.
