Junior School Travel Award

Junior School VisitThe Education and Safety Team at Travel South Yorkshire aim to prepare junior school pupils for the world of public transport, prior to their transition to secondary school. At this stage in their life many pupils experience public transport for the first time as they travel to their new school, or become more independent in their free time. Travel South Yorkshire enables pupils to take this step safely and confidently.

The Education and Safety programme consists of:

  • travel awareness sessions on a real bus
  • a MegaTravel Card opportunity for each pupil
  • pupils being given the opportunity to plan their own public transport journeys
  • each pupil receives a Get Going with Mark booklet and certificate
  • each school recieves a Get Going with Mark Teaching Pack, which includes stickers and postcards for the pupils.

The Get Going with Mark Teachers' Resource Pack can be used as a follow up tool after they have been visited by the Education and Safety Team. The pack contains five classroom posters and teachers notes covering topics such as key facts concerning transport, the environment and how to read bus and tram timetables.

To receive your Junior School Travel Award schools must show a vested interest in how their pupils travel to and from junior school and the transition period they experience from junior to secondary school.

  • Schools must allow access to all Year 6 pupils for travel awareness sessions.
  • Ensure all pupils receive a MegaTravel Card.

Each school who completes the programme will receive a framed Travel South Yorkshire Award.
