    What are the options?

    Bus

    • Bus travel is by far the most popular means of travelling by public transport in and around South Yorkshire.
    • Buses are very convenient as they serve such a wide range of key destinations and link rural and urban areas.
    • The majority of children who catch the bus to school use ordinary services i.e. buses on standard routes that any member of the public can catch at a bus stop.
    • Travel South Yorkshire often provides additional school-specific services to make sure pupils get to school on time. These run like other normal services where the same rules, regulations and fares apply.

    Train

    • For children who live some distance away from their school, catching the train may be the best option.
    • Trains are quick, reliable and safe, with conductors on hand to collect fares and ensure passengers have a comfortable journey.

    Tram

    • The tram network is a popular form of travel in Sheffield. It conveniently links with other bus and train services. Trams offer speed, security and high frequency services.

    Walking and Cycling

    • All schools have a Travel Plan which includes advice on walking and cycling to school safely. What’s more it’s free, environmentally friendly and keeps children fit.

    It’s convenient

    • Encouraging your child to use public transport frees up more time for you and your own journey to work.

    It’s safe

    • You are more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident in a car than on public transport. CCTV also operates on buses, trams and trains for added security.

    It’s environmentally friendly

    • Less than 3%* of road CO² emissions come from buses - even less for tram and train journeys.

    It’s quicker for all

    • Fewer cars on the school run means less congestion, enabling traffic to travel more quickly.

It’s good for your child’s development

    • Public transport provides your child with the independence and social interaction they will benefit from in secondary school.

It improves road safety outside schools

We are all concerned by the number of cars going past schools. Fewer vehicles on the school run minimises this danger, making crossing the road safer for children.
