16-18 Student Pass

The 16-18 Student Pass entitles pass holders to concessionary travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire.  Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern Rail train services in South Yorkshire.

Full ticket information

If you’re under 18, live in South Yorkshire and are in full time education you can get a 16 - 18 Student Pass:

  • this pass is free.
  • you can travel on any bus or tram in South Yorkshire for 70p per journey.
  • you can travel for half price on Northern Rail train services in South Yorkshire.
  • you need a 16-18 Student Pass to buy tickets such as the TravelMaster GetAbout ticket which may save you money each week.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a 16-18 Pass if you:

  • are in full-time education or on a class-room based training course
  • were born between 1 September 1996 and 31 August 1998
  • live in South Yorkshire and your household pays council tax to Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham or Sheffield councils

How to apply

There are four ways to get your pass, depending on your circumstances:

School leavers joining college

If you are leaving school, are going to one of the following colleges and applying for a pass for the first time, you can apply online.

  • Hillsborough
  • Longley
  • Norton
  • Peaks
  • RCAT
  • Sheffield City
  • Thomas Rotherham

Once you have enrolled at college, your details will be confirmed to us and a pass will be posted out to your home address.

Students starting their second year of college

If you’re going into your second year at the same college that is in the list above and haven't changed your address in the last year, then you don't need to do anything.

Once you have enrolled, confirmation will be sent to us and a pass will be issued and posted to your home address.

If you have changed address, please re-apply online.

School leavers joining a sixth form or college not listed above

If you are going to any other college or sixth form you will need to complete the PDF form on your computer, print it and get it signed by an authorised signatory at the sixth form or college you will be attending.

Drop the completed form in our drop box at a Travel South Yorkshire Information Centre and a pass will be ordered for you. Alternatively, post your form to:

School leavers on a training programme that includes classroom-based learning for more than 12 hours per week

If you will be attending a course via a training agency or verified * place of education, that is based in the classroom for more than 12 hours per week, then you should download and complete the PDF form on your computer. Get your completed form signed by an authorised signatory at the training agency or verified place of education you will be attending.

Drop the completed form in our drop box at a Travel South Yorkshire Information Centre and a pass will be ordered for you. Alternatively, post your form to:

When will I receive my pass?

Passes will be posted out after 24 August 2014. You will receive your pass before the start of term in September 2014, depending on the date you apply.
